Respite for carers (North Yorkshire)

Support that helps ensure you're at the centre of your own life.

Our respite service is here to help unpaid carers achieve a better balance between caring and time off, and help people needing care too.

The service involves one of our qualified and professional care support workers providing care and support to people who need it, in their own home.

It has a number of benefits, including giving the person needing care the opportunity to see somebody new. Plus, it enables family and/or friend carers to take time off in the knowledge that their loved one remains safe and supported.

What we do

This is a flexible service, built around the needs and wants of people requiring care and their families.

Care can be provided at dates and times to suit the people who need it – whether that's at a regular time and frequency (for example, weekly, fortnightly or monthly) or on a more ad hoc basis.

And when it comes to the nature of the care we provide – well, that's highly individualised, too. When we first meet the person being cared for, we'll find out what they want and need most. We'll also speak with the person caring for them.

When we've pinpointed the aspects of life that are causing most difficulty, we'll draw up individualised care plans and we’ll get on with providing the help and support that’s needed.

Care for adults

Our respite care service is for people who live in North Yorkshire and provide unpaid care for other adults.

The care we provide can include:

  • Bathing and showering
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Meal preparation and assistance with eating and drinking
  • Assistance with mobility - including getting up and/or going to bed
  • Prompting and/or administering medication
  • Toileting / catheter care
  • Assistance with specialised tasks, such as PEG feeding, stoma care or oxygen therapy.

We can also provide support with activities outside the home; help people pursue their hobbies; or even just be there to provide emotional support or companionship if it's needed.

Care for children

We currently provide a respite service for carers of disabled children living in York. For further details, please contact us.

Funding and eligibility

Our respite care service is available on a flexible basis, as and when you require it. Sessions are available in slots of two hours or more, which are invoiced monthly.

You can receive the services via self funding arrangement or through funding from your local authority, who can support in the form of a personal budget/direct payment that could cover all or some of your care costs. Please contact us or your local council for more information.
