On the 1st October 2023 Shropshire’s annual duck race took place at Betton Mill Bridge in Market Drayton. This year it was in aid of our Shropshire Young Carers team. The event itself was organised by Market Drayton Town Crier, Geoff Russell and local resident Andy Wilson.

Funds were raised by sponsoring a duck for the race. There was also a book stall and a chance to buy your own duck on the day.

One of our Shropshire Young Carers team, Anita Foster, said that she “sold ducks to family, friends and at an event in my local pub.”

Over £275 was raised on the day, this will go towards Christmas activities for the young carers in Shropshire.

Mr Davies, who attended on the day, said it was “a great community event that was fun and full of laughter especially when the boat with the air blower helped the ducks along. It also raised funds for local young carers.”

Jane Davies also added, “On a warm autumn day in Market Drayton, locals and visitors gathered to watch the annual duck race. 100 cheerful ducks launched themselves from bridge 53 into the Shropshire Union Canal and gracefully paddled towards Audlem. Fortunately they were rescued by a duck lover in a coracle.”
